Curtis Ried

Chief of Staff and Executive Secretary, National Security Council, The White House

Curtis Ried currently serves as the Chief of Staff and Executive Secretary of the White House National Security Council.  Prior to becoming Chief of Staff, he served as the NSC’s Senior Director for Multilateral Affairs from 2021-2022.  A career member of the U.S. Foreign Service, Mr. Ried was most recently Deputy Political Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Israel from 2018-2021.  During the Obama Administration, Mr. Ried also served on the NSC as Senior Advisor to National Security Advisor Susan Rice, and prior to that, as the NSC’s Director for UN Affairs.   From 2010-2015, Curtis was a political advisor, and later Political Counselor, at the U.S. Mission to the UN in New York, where he was primarily responsible for the Security Council’s work related to the Middle East. Mr. Ried’s other diplomatic assignments include tours in Algeria, Indonesia, Iraq, Timor-Leste, and the United Kingdom.  A native of California, Mr. Ried holds a B.A. from the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and an M.A. from the Institut d’Etudes Politiques (Sciences Po) in Paris.
