The 41st Annual International Model NATO conference will take place February 12 – 15, 2026. The Model simulates the proceedings of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, enriched by pre-conference study and briefings at embassies
of NATO member states in Washington, DC. It offers a distinctive chance to examine NATO’s role and activities along with the military and political-security issues confronting the Alliance.
By taking part in the simulation, students come to appreciate the capabilities and constraints that shape NATO countries’ policies on collective security. Beyond working through a prepared agenda, students also respond to a contemporary crisis.
Every participating university represents a NATO member state. Participants receive preparatory material, including the Delegation Handbook and Rules of Procedure, plus NATO 101: A Guide to the Alliance’s Purpose, Structure, and History.
Each delegation is briefed at the Embassy of the country it represents.
OBJECTIVES
The International Model NATO aims to:
GIVE
Offer students a chance to sharpen their diplomacy and public speaking skills.
STUDY
Examine NATO’s role, structure, and activities in defending shared interests.
HIGHLIGHT
Spotlight the major military-security, political, and economic issues facing NATO countries, along with recent shifts in NATO’s security policies.
DEMONSTRATE
Show the cooperative patterns that define diplomacy among NATO members as they pursue collective security.
GENERATE
Build understanding of the capabilities and constraints that shape NATO countries’ foreign policies on matters of shared concern.
SIMULATION
The NATO simulation works as follows:
- Each participating institution represents one or more NATO Member States.
- Each NATO member state delegation includes at least 6 students and, where possible, a faculty advisor.
- Before the conference, each delegation receives preparatory material from the sponsors, including the Delegation Handbook, relevant NATO publications, and a preliminary agenda.
- Delegates are encouraged to strengthen their preparation with individual research and, where possible, classroom instruction.
- The sponsors appoint qualified student delegates to preside over each committee’s deliberations.
- The sponsors assign participating university and college professors to serve as faculty advisors and resource persons in each committee.
- The Model simulates NATO’s deliberations as they unfold at its meetings, through debate, negotiation, and more.

The International Model NATO brings together universities from across the Alliance to debate the same security questions that occupy NATO’s own committees. Delegates prepare through the Delegation Handbook, the NATO 101 guide, and briefings at member-state embassies before taking their seats in the North Atlantic Council, Political Committee, Military Committee, Nuclear Planning Group, and other bodies. Faculty advisors and a student secretariat guide the sessions, which culminate in a crisis simulation and a final communiqué.
